The Schlossberg is the steep, wooded hill that rises straight up behind the old town to the east. A small funicular climbs the lower slope from the Stadtgarten, or you can walk up in twenty minutes on shaded paths past the foundations of the medieval city walls. At the top, the Kanonenplatz lookout gives a wide view over the old town's red roofs to the Vosges in France.
A wooden observation tower further up — the Schlossbergturm — gets you above the trees for a 360-degree panorama. The hill is criss-crossed with walking trails leading deeper into the woods, and a beer garden, the Greiffenegg-Schlössle, perched on the lower slope is a fine place for an evening drink with a view.
