Bornheim, north-east of the centre, is the residential neighbourhood that Frankfurters actually live in — a 19th-century grid of four- and five-storey apartment blocks built for clerks and office workers when the city expanded outwards from the Wallanlagen. The Berger Strasse runs through the middle and is one of the most pleasant shopping streets in the city, with old-fashioned bakeries, Turkish greengrocers, second-hand bookshops, neighbourhood restaurants and a small farmers' market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The southern end of Berger Strasse around Merianplatz is the busiest, with a string of bars and beer gardens that are popular with the local twenty- and thirty-something crowd. Walk further north and the street settles into a quieter, more local rhythm. Bornheim is easy to reach by U-Bahn (Bornheim Mitte or Höhenstrasse) and is the best place in Frankfurt to spend an unhurried evening away from the tourists.
