Dialogmuseum

The Dialogmuseum is the Frankfurt branch of "Dialogue in the Dark", a touring exhibition that swaps the conventional museum dynamic: blind guides lead small groups of sighted visitors through a series of constructed environments in complete darkness. The 90-minute tour passes through a forest, a city street, a market, a boat trip and a bar, and the experience of navigating these familiar spaces using only sound, touch and smell is genuinely disorienting and humbling.

A parallel "Dialogue in the Silence" workshop uses deaf guides to teach sign language and communication without sound. Both experiences require advance booking and the city's standard 1.5-hour appointment slots; English-speaking guides are available on request. The museum is in the basement of an office building on Hanauer Landstrasse — easy to miss if you don't look for the sign. Closed Mondays.

A story
Visitors hand in everything before they enter — phone, watch, anything that gives off light — and step into rooms where blind guides lead them through a market, a park, a bar and a street crossing, all in pitch dark. Most visitors find themselves entirely dependent on the blind guides, who navigate the spaces with practised ease and a wry sense of humour.
