Schirn Kunsthalle

The Schirn Kunsthalle is Frankfurt's leading exhibition venue with no permanent collection — instead, it stages four to six major exhibitions a year of international modern and contemporary art. The building, opened in 1986, runs along the eastern flank of the Römerberg in a long red-and-glass arcade leading to a small rotunda; the architecture has dated less gracefully than the curating, but the exhibitions themselves are reliably strong.

Recent shows have included surveys of Hokusai, Pieter Bruegel, Lucian Freud, Edvard Munch, Jeff Koons and the German Romantic painters. The Schirn tends to land the kinds of shows that you would expect to see at the Tate or the Centre Pompidou, and its book-and-design shop is one of the best in Frankfurt. Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 7pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays until 10pm; closed Mondays.
