Museum für Moderne Kunst (MMK)

The MMK is Frankfurt's contemporary art museum and one of the best in Germany. Hans Hollein's striking 1991 building, in the shape of a triangular wedge, sits at the eastern edge of the Altstadt and houses a permanent collection that focuses on art from 1960 to the present — strong holdings in pop art (Lichtenstein, Warhol, Oldenburg), the Düsseldorf school (Beuys, Polke, Richter), and a serious international contemporary collection.

The museum operates a three-house model: the main Hollein triangle (MMK 1), the smaller MMK 2 (a black-box space in the Taunusturm financial district showing single-artist exhibitions), and the Zollamt MMK across the river (a former customs house used for experimental projects). One ticket covers all three. Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm, Wednesdays until 8pm; closed Mondays.

A story
The architect Hans Hollein nicknamed his triangular 1991 building the "slice of cake" — a description so apt it has stuck to the museum ever since. Every gallery is an irregular shape, which forces curators into improvising installations that would never work in a rectangular room.
