Kleinmarkthalle

The Kleinmarkthalle is a two-storey covered market between the Konstablerwache and the Dom, and is the best of Frankfurt's food halls. The ground floor is given over to butchers, cheesemongers, fishmongers, greengrocers and bakers — about 60 stalls in all, almost all family-run, many of them Italian or Turkish — and is the place to come for Frankfurter sausages, Handkäs, fresh pasta, and freshly fried green sauce. The upstairs gallery is a balcony of food bars: Schreiber's bockwurst counter and the Italian wine bar at the south end are local institutions.

The market is open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 8am to 4pm; closed Sundays. The peak time is Saturday lunchtime, when half the city seems to be eating their way slowly through the upstairs gallery with a glass of wine in hand. A traditional Frankfurt experience and one of the best lunches in the centre.

A story
The Kleinmarkthalle was Frankfurt's wholesale meat market until 1954, when it was redesigned as a retail food hall and the original metal hooks were kept along the upper galleries. Some of the same family-run butcher and cheese stalls have traded here continuously since the early 1950s — a few of the older market traders still remember the names of the children of their first regular customers.
