European Central Bank

The European Central Bank's headquarters tower on the eastern edge of Frankfurt is the symbolic centre of the euro zone, and one of the most striking pieces of modern architecture in the city. Designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au and completed in 2014, the building is a 185-metre twisted twin-tower atrium glued onto the side of the old Grossmarkthalle — the city's wholesale fruit and vegetable market of 1928, itself a landmark of early modernism by Martin Elsaesser.

Public access to the building is limited, but the surrounding site is freely walkable, and the cantilevered glass facade is best seen from across the river on the south bank. Of particular note is the small memorial inside the perimeter to the more than 10,000 Jews deported from this same Grossmarkthalle in 1941–45 — a deliberately understated reminder built into the bank's reconstruction. Combine with a walk along the Ostpark, the green belt that begins behind the ECB.
