Aegidienkirche

The smallest of the five great Altstadt churches, in the quietest quarter

The Aegidienkirche is the southernmost and smallest of Lübeck's five great parish churches, in the calm Aegidien quarter where craftsmen and labourers traditionally lived. The exterior is a simple brick hall; the interior holds a magnificent Renaissance rood screen of 1586 and a finely painted Baroque organ loft.

The church was less damaged in 1942 than its larger sisters, so more of the original fittings survived. The neighbourhood around it (often called the Pfaffengasse quarter) has narrow lanes lined with eighteenth-century houses and is one of the most atmospheric corners of the Altstadt to wander.
