An der Untertrave is the riverside street running along the western side of the Altstadt, facing the Holstentor across the Trave. The cobbled promenade was the city's working harbour for centuries — barges from the Stecknitz Canal unloaded salt at the Salzspeicher just upstream, and merchant cogs tied up to discharge cargo at the warehouses on the eastern side.
Today the promenade is lined with restaurants and brewpubs facing the water, with a handful of museum ships moored in summer — the lightship Fehmarnbelt and the schooner Lisa von Lübeck among them. Boat tours of the Altstadt depart from the central landing.
