The Burgtor is the other surviving medieval city gate of Lübeck, at the northern end of the Altstadt island. Built in 1444, it is older than its more famous western sibling the Holstentor but rarely as crowded. The brick tower rises three storeys above a vaulted passage cut through the medieval defensive wall.
Today the Burgtor stands at one end of the most atmospheric stretch of the Altstadt — the area around the Hansemuseum, the Burgkloster, and the lanes leading down to the Trave. A small museum occupies the gate itself. Walking out through the gate and looking back at it gives the best photograph.
