Füchtingshof

Seventeenth-century almshouse courtyard, the largest of its kind in the city

Address Glockengießerstraße 25

The Füchtingshof is a Stiftungshof — a charitable foundation almshouse for widows of merchants and craftsmen — founded by Johann Füchting in his will of 1637. The entry passage is unmarked from Glockengießerstraße, but pass through it and you emerge into a calm rectangular courtyard lined with seventeen small dwellings still occupied by elderly residents (descendants of the trust's beneficiaries).

The architecture is restrained brick, garlanded with climbing plants. The wooden door from the street is the original — heavy, with carved beams. Open during daylight, but the inhabitants are real people; keep your voice down.
