St Jakobi, just south of the Hospital of the Holy Spirit, was built between 1334 and 1500 as the parish church of the city's sailors. The plain brick interior is one of the few major Lübeck churches to have survived the 1942 raid largely intact — the Renaissance organ loft, the two carved late-Gothic altarpieces, the medieval painted ceiling.
The remarkable object is the Pamir Chapel, dedicated to the loss of the Lübeck training ship Pamir, which sank in a hurricane in the Atlantic in 1957 with 80 cadets and crew aboard. The chapel contains a battered lifeboat from the wreck, recovered weeks later by a passing freighter and now a memorial to one of the city's worst maritime losses.
