The Feuerschiff Fehmarnbelt is the last surviving lightship of the German Baltic fleet, moored as a floating museum on the Trave between the Holstentor and the Hansemuseum. Built in 1908, it spent more than 75 years anchored at the Fehmarnbelt strait between Germany and Denmark, warning shipping away from the shallows.
Visitors climb down through the crew quarters, the engine room, the wireless cabin, and the great lantern in the bow — almost everything is original. A small museum below decks tells the history of German lightships and the lives of their crews. The Fehmarnbelt service was discontinued in 1984 with the arrival of automated buoys.
