The Haus der Schiffergesellschaft on Breite Straße opposite the Rathaus is the original 1535 guildhall of the Lübeck shipowners' fraternity. The narrow hall behind the gabled brick facade has the original long wooden benches, the carved oak gallery, ship models hanging from the rafters, and stained-glass coats of arms in the leaded windows.
Since 1869 it has operated as a restaurant. The food is solid traditional German — Labskaus, Königsberger Klopse, herring, plaice — at sensible prices.
