A short walk from the Holstentor on the steep cobbled Kolk lane, this museum holds one of Europe's largest collections of puppets, marionettes, and shadow figures — more than 30,000 objects from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Highlights include nineteenth-century European hand puppets, Indonesian wayang figures, and elaborate Sicilian opera marionettes.
The associated Marionette Theatre next door (the Figurentheater Lübeck) puts on regular performances for children and adults. The Kolk lane itself is one of the oldest streets in the city and worth a walk for the medieval houses and the sloping pavement.
