The Behnhaus and the adjoining Drägerhaus, joined into a single museum on the elegant Königstraße, are restored nineteenth-century merchant residences with their original interiors largely intact: salons, ballroom, libraries, panelled dining rooms. Upstairs, the rooms display the city's collection of Romantic-era paintings — Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, the Nazarenes — alongside Edvard Munch portraits done in the city.
The mid-nineteenth-century neoclassical garden room, painted to imitate marble panels, is one of the most charming interiors in Lübeck. A quiet museum, never very busy, with good information cards in English.
