A small but absorbing museum in the heart of Mykonos Town dedicated to the seafaring history of the Aegean. The collection includes navigation instruments, maps, model ships, figureheads, and paintings tracing the history of Greek merchant shipping from ancient times through the 19th century. The Cyclades were once home to one of the most powerful merchant fleets in the Mediterranean, and Mykonos was a major base for traders and — in less regulated times — pirates.
The garden holds a reconstructed 19th-century Cycladic brig and a collection of antique lighthouses. The museum is well-organised and annotated in Greek and English. It takes about an hour to go through at a comfortable pace and is a good option on a day when the beaches are too windy.
