Archaeological Museum of Mykonos

Established in 1902 near the Old Port, the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos holds finds from the island and from the sacred island of Delos, its near neighbour. The collection includes grave offerings, ceramics, marble sculpture, and jewellery spanning the prehistoric through Hellenistic periods.

The standout piece is a large 7th-century BC pithos (storage jar) decorated with a frieze showing scenes from the fall of Troy, including one of the earliest surviving images of the Trojan Horse. The figure depicted hiding inside the wooden horse looks unnervingly small and human. The museum is uncrowded even in peak season and offers context that makes a visit to Delos considerably richer.

A story
The museum's most famous object is a large storage jar from the 7th century BC decorated with one of the earliest known depictions of the Trojan Horse — a scene from Homer's Iliad rendered in terracotta nearly 2,700 years ago, found on the island of Mykonos itself.
