A handsome white building on the eastern shore of Tjörnin, the National Gallery of Iceland (Listasafn Íslands) holds the country's largest collection of Icelandic art — from the nineteenth-century romantic landscape painters Þórarinn B. Þorláksson and Ásgrímur Jónsson, through Kjarval and the modernists, to contemporary names.
The collection is rotated rather than shown in full, so the exhibitions change every few months. Allow an hour. A small lakeside cafe makes a good follow-up.
