Reykjavík Art Museum — Kjarvalsstaðir

Modernist pavilion in Klambratún park dedicated to Jóhannes Kjarval and contemporary art

Address Flókagata 24

The second of the three Reykjavík Art Museum sites, Kjarvalsstaðir is a low modernist pavilion set in the green expanse of Klambratún park. It is named for the painter Jóhannes Kjarval, the great Icelandic landscape modernist whose moss-and-lava abstractions occupy one wing of the building; the other wing holds rotating shows of contemporary Icelandic art.

Free entry on the Reykjavík Art Museum ticket (which also covers Hafnarhús and Ásmundarsafn). The walk out from the centre takes about twenty minutes; afterwards the park is a good spot for a picnic in the rare warm Reykjavik afternoon.
