Reykjavík Maritime Museum

The story of Iceland and the sea, with a coast-guard cutter you can tour

Address Grandagarður 8

In a former fish-freezing plant on Grandi, the Maritime Museum traces a thousand years of Icelandic life on the water — from the open rowing boats of medieval fishermen through to the modern stern trawlers — with particular emphasis on the Cod Wars of the 1950s to 1970s, when Iceland repeatedly faced down the British Royal Navy to push its fishing limits out to 200 miles.

The highlight is the Óðinn, a 1960 coast-guard cutter that fought in those Cod Wars and is now moored outside; guided tours of the bridge and engine room run several times a day in summer.
