Easily overlooked next to its grander neighbour Hallgrímskirkja, Dómkirkjan is the actual cathedral of the Icelandic Lutheran church. The building is small — barely the size of a parish chapel — but the interior, restored in pale wood and white plaster, is one of the prettiest in the city.
The cathedral dates from 1796 and has the unusual distinction of being where every Icelandic Althing session opens with a service before the members walk across Austurvöllur to the parliament next door. Sunday morning service is open and short.
