The street that climbs from the centre up to Hallgrímskirkja, Skólavörðustígur, was painted with a permanent rainbow flag in 2019 in support of Reykjavik Pride — and the colours have become one of the most photographed sights in the city, with the church rising at the top as a perfect backdrop.
The street itself is lined with some of the best independent shops in town: Icelandic wool sweaters, jewellery, design, the long-running bookshop Mál og menning, and a string of cafes for an espresso on the way up.
