Saga Museum

Silicone life-size figures act out the founding sagas of Iceland

Address Grandagarður 2

Inside an old shipbuilding hall on Grandi, the Saga Museum tells the story of the first three hundred years of Iceland through tableaux of unsettlingly realistic silicone figures: Ingólfur Arnarson throwing his high-seat pillars overboard at Reykjavik, the lawspeakers of Þingvellir, Snorri Sturluson in his hot pool at Reykholt, Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir setting off for Vinland.

The audio guide does a good job of weaving the saga texts into a narrative; you come out with a much clearer sense of who fought whom and why. It is touristy but takes its history seriously.
