Icelandic Phallological Museum

A serious, slightly ridiculous museum of mammal genitalia

Address Kalkofnsvegur 2

A small, surprisingly scholarly museum dedicated to the penises of every mammal species in Iceland — whales, seals, foxes, sheep, mice, the lot. Roughly 280 specimens are on display in jars and on plaques, with bilingual labels that give the species, the length, and the curator's wry comments.

It sounds like a one-joke attraction and it half is, but the museum is well-curated, has a sense of humour about itself, and is a popular stop for anyone with an hour to fill before the Flybus. Admission around 2,500 ISK.

A story
The founder, a retired teacher named Sigurður Hjartarson, started the collection in 1974 when colleagues began giving him bull pizzles as joke gifts. He spent the next thirty years adding to it. The museum's stated goal is to be the only institution in the world with specimens from every mammal species in a single country.
