Nordic House

Cultural centre by Alvar Aalto on the south side of Tjörnin

Address Sturlugata 5

A low, calm cultural centre tucked behind the University of Iceland on the south side of Tjörnin, the Nordic House (Norræna húsið) was designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and opened in 1968. It hosts exhibitions, talks, concerts and a small Nordic library, and has the easy elegance of Aalto's late work — pale wood, soft daylight, a long view across the lake to the cathedral.

Free to enter; the cafe and bistro both have a small following among Reykjavik intellectuals on a quiet weekday. The building is itself one of the city's better pieces of architecture.
