A narrow-gauge railway running 24 kilometres from Genoa's Piazza Manin station up into the wooded hills of the Ligurian hinterland, ending at the small village of Casella. The train is slow by design — it takes an hour each way — and the journey through gorges, over viaducts, and past terraced hillside villages is the entire point.
The line is popular at weekends with hikers who take it up and walk back along the trails that parallel the track. In the other direction, the train descends to the city in time for a late lunch. The rolling stock is a mix of old and less-old carriages that add to the vintage atmosphere. Schedules are limited — check departure times before setting out.
