Principe-Granarolo Funicular

Historic rack-railway that climbs steeply from the station district to hilltop Granarolo

Despite being called a funicular by everyone including its operators, the Principe-Granarolo line is technically a rack railway — it uses a cog system to climb the steep hillside above the Principe train station. It was opened in 1901 and gives access to the hilltop neighbourhood of Granarolo, with views back over the port and the city below.

The upper station sits in a green residential area that feels entirely removed from the urban density below. From Granarolo you can walk along the old city walls — a section of the 17th-century walls that enclosed the entire city still runs along the ridge — to reach the Forte Diamante and other hillside fortifications. The funicular operates daily; the round trip takes about 25 minutes.
