Nervi (Cliff Walk and Parks)

Scenic suburb with a cliff walk, parks, and a good shingle beach

Nervi is Genoa's most appealing seaside suburb, reachable in 20 minutes by train from Brignole station. The main draw is the Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi, a 2-kilometre cliff walk cut into the rock above the sea, with views along the coast in both directions. The walk passes over bridges and through tunnels in the limestone and is one of the most dramatic short coastal walks in Liguria.

At the base of the cliff, a small shingle beach offers swimming in clear water. Above, the former estates of the Genoese nobility have been converted into public parks — the Parchi di Nervi — with mature gardens and three museums: the Raccolte Frugone (modern Italian art), the Wolfsoniana (decorative arts), and the Galleria d'Arte Moderna. A good half-day trip from central Genoa.
