One of the oldest surviving Romanesque churches in Genoa, San Donato dates from the 12th century. The octagonal bell tower is the most distinctive element of the exterior, rising in diminishing stages with decorated windows at each level. The interior preserves Romanesque proportions under later decorative additions.
The church sits in a small piazza at the edge of the caruggi, easy to find on any walk through the old city. Inside, the painting of The Adoration of the Magi by Jan Provost (1518) is worth seeking out — a Flemish painting in a Genoese church, testament to the commercial connections between Genoa and the Low Countries.
