Milan's most elaborate cemetery, designed by Carlo Maciachini and opened in 1866. The entrance pavilion (the Famedio) is a neo-Gothic structure in marble and brick; the cemetery itself stretches out behind it in a vast open-air museum of funerary sculpture from the 19th and 20th centuries. The tombs range from Art Nouveau masterpieces to Futurist monuments to sober modernist slabs.
This is one of the great sculpture collections in Italy, and admission is free. Pick up a map at the entrance — the highlights are spread across a large area and easily missed without one. Allow at least an hour. The cemetery is reached by tram from the centre in about 15 minutes.
