Torre Velasca

Brutalist 1958 skyscraper with a mushroom-shaped overhanging top, a Milan landmark

Address Piazza Velasca 5, 20122 Milan

A striking 26-storey tower completed in 1958, designed by BBPR architects as one of the most distinctive buildings of the postwar Italian modernism. The tower's mushroom-like form — a narrow lower shaft widening dramatically at the upper floors — was controversial when built and remains polarising. It is one of the most debated buildings in Italian architecture history, admired by some as a brilliant synthesis of modernism and medieval Lombard tower traditions, dismissed by others as willfully ugly.

Either way, it dominates the southern skyline of central Milan and is unmistakable from a distance. Best seen from Piazza Missori or from the rooftop of the Duomo. The interior is residential; there is no public access.
