De Hallen occupies a converted tram depot on Kinkerstraat, the main commercial artery of Oud-West — a long, busy street of independent restaurants and ordinary neighbourhood shops that have mostly been pushed out of areas closer to the centre. Inside, the old depot houses a food hall with a dozen or so stalls, a cinema, and a boutique hotel, all built into the original industrial structure.
The food hall is the main draw, especially on weekends when a flea and vintage market sets up alongside it. It's a good stop if you're exploring Oud-West rather than a destination in its own right — Amsterdam's version of a neighbourhood the locals actually live in, without much catering to tourists.
