Amsterdam's most beautiful cinema, and a strong contender for the most beautiful cinema in the world. Built in 1921 in an extravagant mix of Art Deco and Amsterdam School styles, the interior is a riot of stained glass, carved wood, hand-painted murals, and plush carpets. The main auditorium seats 800 under a vast decorated ceiling.
Tuschinski still functions as a working cinema — Pathé runs mainstream films here — so the easiest way to see the interior is to buy a ticket for whatever is showing. Try to get a seat in the main hall rather than one of the smaller screening rooms. Guided tours of the building are occasionally offered. The facade on Reguliersbreestraat is worth admiring even if you don't go in: ornate lamps, sculpted figures, and a carpet that runs from the street to the box office.
