De Verwoeste Stad, or The Destroyed City, is Ossip Zadkine's powerful 1953 memorial to the bombing of Rotterdam. The cubist bronze figure, shown with its heart torn out, is one of the city's most recognizable reminders of the destruction and rebuilding that shaped modern Rotterdam.
