Floating Farm

Working dairy farm on a pontoon in the Merwehaven

A working dairy farm on a pontoon in the Merwehaven, opened in 2019. The Floating Farm is half a working business — roughly thirty cows, robot milking, yoghurt and cheese made on board and sold from a shop on the quay — and half a demonstration project: agriculture that can adapt to flooded cities and rising seas.

Visitors can walk along the quay and look across the gangway to see the cows; tours (in Dutch and English) and a small farm shop sit on the landward side. A short metro ride from the centre to Marconiplein, then a 15-minute walk.

A story
The world's first floating farm opened in 2019 on a pontoon in the old Merwehaven, with thirty-odd Meuse-Rhine-Issel cows producing yoghurt and cheese sold directly from the dock. The cows actually like it — climate-controlled stalls, robot milking, and a surprisingly stable platform — but the point is the demonstration: agriculture that can adapt to flooded cities.
