Dyreparken (Zoo)

A large combined zoo, amusement park and water park about ten kilometres east of the city centre at Kjevik. The animal collection — tigers, red pandas, wolves, native species — is fine but not the main attraction. What draws Norwegian families from the entire country is Kardemomme By, a walk-in recreation of the imaginary town from Thorbjørn Egner's beloved 1955 children's book, complete with the three robbers, the lion, and the bakery selling the cakes Tante Sofie warns you not to eat.

Allow a full day in summer; queues for the major rides and the water park can be long. Bus 35 runs from the city centre every twenty minutes. Tickets are not cheap by international standards but are good for re-entry through the day.

A story
The original 1966 zoo was a fairly modest moose and lynx affair; what made it famous was the 1991 decision to recreate Thorbjørn Egner's children's-book town of Kardemomme in full scale, with the original cast of robbers and a tame lion living among real visitors. Generations of Norwegian children have grown up on the story; many of them later turn up at the zoo with their own children.
