The Southern Norway Art Museum occupies the handsome late-nineteenth-century building of the former Cathedral School, half a block from the cathedral. The permanent collection is mainly modern and contemporary Norwegian art, with a particular strength in southern artists; visiting exhibitions occupy the upstairs galleries.
A new much larger building, Kunstsilo, opened in 2024 in a converted grain silo on Odderøya and now houses the bulk of the modern collection, including the Nicolai Tangen gift of Nordic modernism. The original building remains in use for changing exhibitions.
