Opened in May 2024, Kunstsilo is the most ambitious cultural building in Kristiansand in a generation — a converted 1930s functionalist grain silo on the harbour at Odderøya, sliced open by Spanish architects Mestres Wåge and Mendoza Partida to make seven floors of gallery space inside the original concrete cylinders. The rooftop terrace has the best view in the city, over the harbour and out into the archipelago.
The collection focuses on Nordic modernism, with strong holdings in Edvard Munch, Asger Jorn, Per Krohg and the Scandinavian Cobra group, together with rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. Allow at least two hours; the building alone deserves an hour of slow exploration.
