Odderøya

The rocky peninsula that closes off Kristiansand's harbour on the south side, joined to the Kvadraturen by a short causeway. For three hundred years it was off limits — first as a quarantine station for ships from Mediterranean ports, then as a naval base — and only opened to the public in 2000. Today it is a large urban park of pine woods, granite outcrops and a network of marked walking paths, with views across the harbour and out to the open sea.

The southern tip has the original 1832 lighthouse and a small naval cemetery from the cholera years. A handful of artists' studios and small cafes occupy the former military buildings near the bridge. Allow an hour for the basic loop, half a day if you want to swim from one of the rocky bathing spots on the seaward side.
