Anglesey Abbey is a National Trust property about 10 kilometres northeast of Cambridge, reached by bus from the city centre. The house, built in Jacobean style on the site of a medieval priory, contains Lord Fairhaven's extraordinary collection of furniture, paintings, silver, and clocks.
The garden is the real draw — 114 acres of formal walks, herbaceous borders, a water mill, and winter garden plantings that make it worth visiting even in January. The daffodil and hyacinth displays in spring are exceptional. Open Wednesday to Sunday (and bank holidays) throughout the year; admission is charged.
