Trinity College - the Backs

Cambridge's grandest college with riverside Backs

Trinity is the largest and wealthiest of the Cambridge colleges, founded by Henry VIII in 1546. Its Great Court is the biggest enclosed courtyard in Europe, and the Wren Library — designed by Christopher Wren and completed in 1695 — holds medieval manuscripts and a first edition of Newton's Principia.

The real draw for a casual visit is the Backs, the stretch of lawns and meadows running down to the River Cam behind the college. You can punt along the river, watch cricket on the fields, or just sit on the grass with a book. Access the Backs through the college's side entrance on Queen's Road — admission is free.
