Madingley American Cemetery

The Cambridge American Cemetery at Madingley is the only Second World War American military cemetery in the United Kingdom. It holds 3,812 graves of American servicemen killed in the European and Atlantic theatres, arranged in a fan pattern on immaculate lawns outside the village of Madingley, about five miles west of Cambridge. A long wall of white marble records the names of 5,127 service members who were lost or never identified.

The cemetery is maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission and is open daily, free of charge. It is a place of genuine solemnity. The visitor centre has exhibits explaining the campaigns in which those buried here participated. Bus services from Cambridge city centre are limited; a bicycle or taxi is more practical.

A story
The 3,812 graves at Madingley represent only a fraction of those commemorated here. The Wall of the Missing records the names of 5,127 American servicemen whose remains were never found or identified — more names on the wall than there are graves in the earth. Most died in the Battle of the Atlantic, their aircraft or ships lost without trace in the North Sea or the approaches to Britain.
