Clare College and Clare Bridge

Clare College, founded in 1326, is the second oldest surviving college in Cambridge and sits in one of the most beautiful positions on the Backs — its 17th and 18th-century main courts lead directly to the river and Clare Bridge, the oldest bridge in Cambridge. The bridge's distinctive stone balls and the missing segment on one of them are a Cambridge landmark.

The Fellows' Garden, one of the finest college gardens in Cambridge, is open to visitors in term time for a small charge. The garden is a formal arrangement of box hedges, herbaceous borders, and a sunken garden with views across the Cam toward King's Chapel. Clare College charges admission to enter the main courts.

A story
Clare Bridge, built in 1638, is the oldest surviving bridge in Cambridge. One of its fourteen stone balls has a wedge-shaped segment missing — according to legend, cut out by the stonemason who built it in protest at being underpaid. The missing segment is real; the story about the stonemason may or may not be. The bridge is visible from the towpath below the Backs.
