Mill Road is the main street of multicultural Cambridge — a mile-long stretch running southeast from the city centre through the working-class Romsey Town neighbourhood that has gradually filled with independent shops, restaurants, and cafes. It is where Cambridge residents actually shop and eat: Turkish, Ethiopian, Sri Lankan, Persian, and Indian restaurants; a Saturday morning street market; independent bookshops; a deli or two; and some of the city's best pubs.
The road has a strong community character quite different from the tourist-facing centre. The annual Mill Road Winter Fair (December) closes the street and turns it into a neighbourhood celebration. It is also a good area to stay if you want somewhere within walking distance of the city but off the main tourist circuit.
