St John's is home to the much-photographed Bridge of Sighs, a covered bridge over the River Cam modelled (loosely) on its Venetian namesake. Founded in 1511, the college spans centuries of architecture -- from the Tudor First Court to the Victorian New Court with its Gothic Revival cloister.
The Backs here are among the finest in Cambridge, with sweeping lawns running down to the river. The chapel, completed in 1869, has an imposing tower visible from much of the city centre. Visitors can enter during opening hours for a small fee; check the porter's lodge for current times, as these vary during term.
