Blaydes House

Grade II* Georgian merchant's house on High Street, owned by the Blaydes shipbuilding family who built HMS Bounty

Blaydes House is a fine Georgian townhouse on High Street, built around 1730 for the Blaydes family, Hull's most prominent shipbuilders of the period. They built warships for the Royal Navy in their nearby yard, including, most famously, HMS Bounty — the vessel later commandeered by Fletcher Christian in the South Pacific mutiny of 1789.

The house is now owned by the University of Hull and used by its Maritime Historical Studies Centre, so it is not generally open to the public. The facade — symmetrical, with a fine fanlight and a wrought-iron balcony — is the best preserved Georgian frontage in the city and worth a look in passing.
