The Guildhall on Lowgate is the seat of Hull City Council and was completed in 1916 in a flamboyant Edwardian baroque style intended to rival civic palaces in larger cities. The exterior is studded with allegorical statuary and topped by a clock tower; the marble interior includes a vaulted main hall and a council chamber lined with portraits of past mayors and aldermen.
Public tours are run on Heritage Open Days and at occasional weekends through the year. The roof gives one of the best views of the Old Town and the docks. The civic silver collection, including some pieces from the 16th century, is also on display when tours are running.
