Humber Bridge

Single-span suspension bridge over the Humber estuary, the longest in the world for 16 years after opening in 1981

The Humber Bridge crosses the estuary just outside the city, linking East Yorkshire to North Lincolnshire. It is breathtaking up close — the towers rise 155 metres above water level — and the long approach roads give it an almost airport-like sense of scale. The bridge carries a footway and cycle path on both sides; walking across takes about 25 minutes and is one of the best things to do near Hull on a clear day.

The country park on the north bank, at the foot of the bridge, has parking, a cafe, and the best view back along the suspension cables. The bridge is most striking at sunset, when the towers catch the last light and the lights along the deck come on against the water.

A story
When the Humber Bridge opened in 1981 its main span of 1,410 metres made it the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world — a record it kept until the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan opened in 1998. It is still in the world's top 15 by span length. The bridge was financed by tolls and a controversial loan that took until 2012 to clear. Tolls were halved that year as a result.
