Lafayette Square is one of Savannah's classic pause points, laid out in 1837 and named for the Marquis de Lafayette. It sits in a particularly photogenic pocket of the Historic District, with the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist nearby and the Andrew Low House adding another layer of 19th-century architecture.
The square is small, shaded, and best treated as part of a walking route rather than a single attraction. Sit by the fountain for a few minutes and you get what Savannah does well: formal urban planning softened by live oaks, ironwork, church towers, and slow foot traffic.
